Shrieking Violet is a combination of LGBT symbolism, 1915s silhouettes, and a fear of dying before experiencing love. The ballet motifs are inspired by the Wilis from the Giselle ballet, these are women who died from unrequited love or before their wedding day. Violets are a well-known symbol for lesbian and bisexual women which inspired my use of them in this piece. This also plays upon a trope known as “bury your gays” since often in film or books. The veil of the gown serves as both a wedding veil and a funeral shroud.
